A For my eighth concentration piece, I chose to do Indian mythology/religion. The being I painted is Hanuman, a trickster monkey god. Hanuman is always depicted in a pose with his right hand up and left hand holding a staff, so I decided to paint him with an interesting angle to put a twist on it. This piece was done on watercolor paper with watercolor paint. This was the piece I've enjoyed the most so far. I'm very used to using watercolor and I like the end product very much. The easiest part of this painting was the hair, since making simple strokes to add dimension can be fairly easy. The hardest part of this painting was the skin, I had a lot of trouble making the skin with dark enough values, and I chose not to use a darker blue but mixed with purple.
First, I sketched the monkey out extremely lightly in pencil. and then painted the light base color of the face and body over top. Not paying much attention to value yet. Then I began to add value and blushing to the body to make the deity look more alive and less like a smurf. I painted the peachy base color to the hands and feet and did the same process on the skin, shading and adding blush. I went in with a dark blue/purple outline on the blue body to make it stand out more, and did the same with the hands afterwards. This was when I decided to add purple values to the skin and more blushing on the cheek. I painted his hair with a light green mixed with grey as the base color, and then went in with darker green/black to make it more dimensional. The clothing was next, I used various reds and golds to make the clothing and golden pierces. I did the same dark outline to make them stand out more, and added a touch of glittery watercolor paint onto the gold and pink jewelry on his body. Lastly, I painted the background with light yellow to dark orange, and then added gold glittery paint to it again. The final touches were opaque white paint to highlight certain parts of his body. I would gladly work on a project like this again.
