For my landscape project, I chose to do a Maori culture-inspired forest scene. In Maori folklore, there is a forest god called Tane, and I decided to hide his face in this picture as part of a tree. The figures around the forest called Patupaiarehe, which are white ghouls whom fear the forest god, which is why they are hiding. This project is entirely digital, digital painting is something I am still learning how to do, but it was very enjoyable. The most difficult part of the painting were the rocks. Rocks always have an indefinite shape and always find out how to be a challenge for me. The rocks I used for reference were covered in moss and were more like boulders, which did not help. The easiest part were the trees. Trees and bark are very fun to do, because you can use strands of different colors to make vines and roots.
I started the project by making base colors/outlines for the shapes in the painting, placing them on seperate layers. When coloring in the rocks, I used greyish greens and blacks. For the trees, I used an almost-yellow brown color along with more green. I had to add a lot of green in the picture to make the scenery seem very organic and almost moist, since it is a rainforest. The water under the trees was done with an airbrush tool and bright white colors to emphasize on the sunlight coming fro the top of the trees. Afterwards, I added in the ghouls and changed the hue just a bit to fit in the darker corners of the forest. The last thing I did was use a splatter tool to give the rocks and trees a mossy cover. As I hope to become a type of digital artist, I will be doing more digital work in the future.
