For the self portraits project, as well as a first concentration project, I decided to paint myself as the classic Greek/Roman Mythical creature, the Satyr/Fawn. I chose this because I've done normal portraits and wanted to do something different this time. Fantasy subjects like this hold a special place in my heart. For my reference picture, I wore rubber horns I had since last Halloween.
This was done in Oil on canvas, I have only done one other oil painting in class, so I struggled some with the skin blending and color of my face. I started with the skin, making it a more yellowish/grayish tone since the setting is winter. The easiest part of the painting process for me was the hair, my hair is very curly and wavy, and it was a lot of fun to exaggerate that and found it easy to paint. What I had the most trouble with was making sure the painting actually did look like me. At the very end, I ended up having to tweak my nose and eyes very much to make sure it looked like me.
The last thing I painted was the snow, I mostly did that by dotting with white/grey/ pale blue paint in areas where the snow would build up. The snow my part of the painting takes inspiration from the movies/book Narnia. I decided to have snow collect on my horns and jacket, as well as on my eyelashes and curves of my hair. This project was very fun for me, and I think it would be fun to do it again.
