For my seventh concentration piece, I chose to do a Puerto Rican festival. I am Puerto Rican, so this piece means a lot to me. On St. James day, everybody dresses as these demons, named Vejigante. They wear colorful robes and dance in paper mache demon masks. This piece was done in gouache paint on a piece of watercolor paper. This project was quite frustrating since gouache can be a bit tedious to paint with. The easiest part of this project was adding the glitter in the end, sure you can't see it in the picture but there's golden watercolor on certain parts of the Vejigantes body, and it really brings the piece out. The hardest part was the pink hand, since I had trouble getting a good outline since the blue gouache accidentally went over. Gouache is difficult to paint over since it just reactivates it.
First I sketched out the monster lightly with red colored pencil, and painted in the background, choosing to go with a fiery orange/gold. The blue of the helm was painted first and then I gradually began to finish the mask in general. I moved onto the neck piece with purples and pinks, as well as making the ruffles on the outfit lime green. I then colored the entire robe in a light blue and added value with darker blue and purple. Adding more detail to the horns and then painting the underskirt purple, I added the ruffled under the skirt and painted in the base colors of the hands before going into detail. Finally, the last details were the spots on the mask, stripes on the robe, and confetti in the air to simulate a fiesta-feel. I am very pleased with this project, and would enjoy doing it again, probably in a different medium though.
