For my third Concentration piece, I chose to do Chinese folklore. In Chinese legend, Lei Gong is a god of thunder and lightning, and he bangs on a drum to produce the thunder. In many pictures, he is depicted with green skin and orange hair, along with golden wings. This is acrylic paint on canvas, I really enjoyed this project because anything fantasy is very up-my-alley, and I find acrylic paint very fun to use. The easiest part of this project was painting the green skin, because I find the values very simple. The wings were also somewhat easy because my last project involved feathers as well. The most difficult parts of this project were the clouds behind and in front of Lei Gong. I've done clouds before, but I wanted the god to seem massive. I attempted to make the clouds smaller to have that effect. The lightning was fairly easy because they were simply jagged lines.
First, I painted the skin with viridian green and pthalo blue, using the dark blue to add value because the storm has blue undertones. Afterwards, I painted the hair and the chest piece. I added the base color on the wings, and added value using the same pthalo blue as the skin. For highlights I used very broad non-blended lines to make it seem like actual gold, as I did with all of the golden jewelry on Lei Gong. From then on, I painted the pants and other accessories. The background was a mix of grey, blue, and white, and I used a darker grey-blue for the clouds. Once I painted all of the clouds and added the lightning with plain white, I mixed the colors on Lei Gong with white in order to add the highlight from the lightning in front of him.
